Mark tells us that these pack horses of the river where instrumental to the development of the communities "downriver". People would pack everything they own on one of these boats and head into the unknown. When they got to where they where going, they would dismantle the boat and use it to start construction of a new home. These boats would also haul groceries, supplies and machinery to the mines downriver.
