Railroad Canyon
back

On a beautiful day in June we drove up over Bannock Pass, out of Leadore, and explored this old railroad bed. This railroad used to carry the precious metals that were mined in Gilmore to the smelters and processing plants in Montana. The railroad bed wound its way up the canyon to a tunnel at the top of the pass. We followed the bed up the east side of the mountains to the mouth of the tunnel, which is now caved in.

A glance back down the old bed gives us a view of the Montana wilderness out in the distance. We are looking at the valley the Lewis and Clark Expedition took to head up over Lemhi Pass (40 miles to the northwest).

Thanks for coming on this adventure.
