MISSOULA -

A strong low pressure system will bring widespread heavy rain with embedded thunderstorms starting this evening across southwest and west-central Montana, along the Divide, and into Lemhi County, Idaho.  Rises on rivers, streams, and creeks are expected and could lead to flooding in areas with the heaviest rain.

A Flood Watch has been posted for all of southwest Montana from Monday evening through late Tuesday night for 1"-2" (locally up to 3") of rainfall creating those rises on area rivers, creeks and streams. The heaviest rain is expected tonight into Tuesday morning before beginning to tapering off Tuesday afternoon.

Another potential hazard from this system will be mountain snow (generally above 7,000') Tuesday morning.  At this point, the heaviest snow looks to impact unimproved and USFS roads located in the higher terrain over the southern Bitterroots, Lemhi, Anaconda, Pintlar and Flint Creek mountain ranges....

By LAURA ZUCKERMAN SALMON — The Salmon River is predicted this week to reach its highest level in more than two decades, a flood stage driven mostly by the melting of mountain snow but also recent rains, according to the National Weather Service office in Missoula, Mont. On Friday, the river overtook Island Park on the west end of downtown Salmon even as several residents north of town used sandbags and other materials in attempt to keep at bay a creek that was inundating low-lying properties. The Salmon River is forecast to peak at between 9.1 and 9.2 feet on Tuesday afternoon. That’s considered on the high end of moderate flooding but historically comparable to high water events that occurred in the 1980s, said National Weather Service meteorologist Ryan Leach....

The last we left you with this story was when Megan (Not Michelle..was my fault) Tucker was busy in the shop being mentored by Don Moore an expert Blacksmith, creator, maker on her senior project. She wanted to give back to the library with a landscape sculpture that would stand the test of time. We got to see her learning the wonderful art of welding and bring a vision to life.

This project is to fund at least one half of the cost of a new/slightly used YANMAR SV08 1A Mini Excavator. Because our program is actively working with trail user groups we have other fundraising projects going on that are specific to trails and trail use. We expect that we cannot raise the total amount via these other projects so it is our hopes that we can gain support from individuals that value safe accesses to public lands.
