Lemhi County Citizen Journalism

10/25/12  Letter to the Editor

Choosing a Sheriff

I’ve been studying the printed material received from both candidates in the upcoming sheriff’s election, in order to make an informed decision on how to cast my vote. Incumbent Lynn Bowerman provides succinct, bullet-pointed listings of information about himself under the topics Qualifications, Vision as Sheriff, and his past Track Record during two years of service as Lemhi County Sheriff. The section of his brochure “Meet Lynn Bowerman” is especially informative. In contrast, by reading the challenger’s brochure, all I learn about Clark Wilmoth is that he has worked as a professional trainer
of law enforcement professionals. I don’t even know if he is currently working as an officer of the law. It would have been helpful if—especially, as he goes up against an incumbent—Mr. Wilmoth could have given voters the opportunity to do an apples-to-apples comparison of each man’s qualifications. I’m left to wonder why he did not.

I read about a lot of changes Mr. Wilmoth would make, but nothing I read allows an informed decision on whether he has the experience and qualifications to make those changes. The challenger states “As a professional law enforcement trainer I know from experience..” and “My professional experience allows me to establish..” but gives readers no information about what that experience is. Statements like “Furthermore…” “In addition…”  and most of all “Studies have shown…” don’t give me the confidence I need to reject the incumbent on the challenger’s behalf.

A long-time resident of Idaho, Lynn left his birthplace of Walla Walla, WA in 1971 to attend college at Northwest Nazarene College in Nampa, ID. While attending college, to become a teacher, Lynn had an opportunity to become a reserve deputy for the Sheriff ’s Office in Caldwell, ID. The law enforcement bug got into his veins and he continued his education while volunteering. In 1975 a full-time position opened and Lynn’s full time career began.
